The acting governor of Ondo state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has been sworn in as the substantive governor of the state.

Aiyedatiwa’s swearing in was conducted by the Chief Judge of Ondo state following the demise of late governor Rotimi Akeredolu in the early hours of Wednesday, December 27.

Akeredolu was said to have battled leukemia until his death.

The State government said in a statement that he died if prostrate cancer.

It appeared he was afflicted by both.

The 67-year-old politician returned to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany and only recently proceeded on another one after he was directed by President Bola Tinubu to hand over power to his deputy, Aiyedatiwa.

His deputy, Aiyedatiwa, had been standing in as Acting Governor.

Aiyedatiwa’s walk to becoming the governor of Ondo State was a long one that lasted one year since Akeredolu suffered health challenges before he eventually succumbed to the claws of death on Wednesday.

Aiyedatiwa survived an impeachment plot by Akeredolu’s allies in the Ondo State House of Assembly.
