A former Commissioner for Agriculture in Kano State, Yusuf Kibiya, has been elected as the new chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The election results announced on Sunday by the Election Committee chairman, Halilu Mazagani, confirmed Kibiya’s resounding victory over his opponent, Nura Nuhu. Kibiya garnered 3,964 votes, while Nuhu secured 244 votes.

Kibiya, who served as Commissioner under ex-governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, from 1999 to 2003, will now lead the party in the state.

In his acceptance speech, he emphasized the PDP’s readiness to tackle internal challenges and prepare for future electoral contests.

“Our party being the largest in Africa, no doubt, faces some internal challenges, but as always, we have learnt to manage our differences,” Mazagani said while announcing the election results.

“I can assure you today that we are working hard to ensure unity and we are mobilising like never before, to ensure our success in the forthcoming 2027 general elections, which I can confidently say the people will vote for us.”

Mazagani called for unity among party members and stressed the importance of presenting credible candidates to the electorate.

“So, it is now left for us to present credible candidates to Nigerians like we did before, and we wish to improve on that,” he added.

At the event, former Kano State governor and PDP stalwart, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, also addressed the audience, expressing optimism about the party’s prospects.

“The PDP is poised to challenge any party in any election in the country, including the local government election scheduled to hold on October 26, 2024,” Shekarau said.

He assured party members and supporters that the PDP would present a formidable team for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
